Overview

This project at Doreen ave was a dance between symmetry and stark differences, on one hand you have these almost identical modern boxes added on as extensions and on the other hand they are a stark contrast to the original cottage that is nestled between them.

While the space that was added to the cottage by these extensions was necessary, It has gained a lot more than just practical extra room, the spaces tie in with the old original in just enough ways but then also bring a touch of modern and grand with the high skillion ceiling of the lounge and the modern master out the back.

Challenges

The biggest challenge on this project was tying the new modern extensions back onto the original cottage both visually and practically, this was however made a lot easier by the clever design of the “bridge” tie in areas, its essentially a small hallway walkthrough with a simple low pitched membrane roof, this allows the two new extension rooflines to tie in a lot easier and visually helps break the new and old.

Outcome

The result is a beautiful feeling space that highlights features of both new and old, while achieving the practical brief of creating more liveable, family friendly space.
